Development Background and Strategic Significance of Independent Development of Ship Propellers

Against the backdrop of profound transformations in the global shipping industry and the restructuring of supply chains, the independent controllability of core supporting marine equipment has become a key indicator for measuring a country's competitiveness in the shipbuilding sector. As a core component of marine propulsion systems, the design and manufacturing standards of propellers directly determine a vessel's propulsion efficiency, energy consumption and navigation safety. For a long time, the high-end marine propeller market has been monopolized by a small number of foreign enterprises, which keep core design technologies and manufacturing processes confidential to outside parties. China's shipbuilding industry was once trapped in a predicament where it could develop ship hull designs yet lacked mastery of core technologies. This not only kept procurement costs persistently high but also subjected delivery cycles to restrictions imposed by overseas manufacturers, severely undermining the global competitiveness of China's shipbuilding industry.

As China enters a critical phase in building itself into a leading shipbuilding nation, achieving independent development of ship propellers and breaking overseas technological monopolies is not only essential for ensuring the security of the shipbuilding industry's supply chain but also a strategic pillar for advancing the green transformation of the shipping sector and boosting global market share. A series of new emission reduction regulations introduced by the International Maritime Organization, such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), have imposed stricter requirements on vessel energy consumption and carbon emissions, compelling shipping companies to accelerate equipment upgrades. Developing domestically efficient and energy saving propellers enables Chinese shipbuilders and shipping enterprises to take the initiative in their green transition and reduce lifecycle operational costs. Data shows that replacing an ultra-large oil tanker with a domestically developed high-efficiency propeller can save approximately 35 million yuan in annual fuel costs, yielding significant emission reduction benefits.

From a national strategic perspective, the shipbuilding industry is a key strategic pillar sector for China. As a core component of major national infrastructure, the level of independent development for propellers directly impacts national defense security and the building of a maritime power. Whether for large civilian container ships, LNG carriers, or military vessels, domestically produced propellers with reliable performance and precise specifications are essential. Achieving independent development will completely eliminate reliance on foreign suppliers, provide a fundamental impetus for the high-quality growth of China's shipbuilding industry, and facilitate the nation's transition from a major shipbuilding country to a leading shipbuilding power.

Representative achievements in the independent development of ship propellers in our country have achieved significant breakthroughs.

After years of technological breakthroughs, China's independent development of ship propellers has achieved comprehensive progress ranging from small and medium-sized vessels to high-end large vessels, with multiple flagship products successfully delivered, breaking the monopoly of overseas manufacturers in the high-end market. Among these achievements, the independent development of propellers for large LNG carriers represents a significant milestone in China's proprietary ship propeller development journey. In 2024, Dalian Ship Propulsion Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Dalian Company, successfully delivered a dual-tail fin propeller for a 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier, independently designed and manufactured. This propeller is a double-tail fin internal rotation propeller with a single blade diameter of 8.4 meters and manufacturing precision meeting Sclass standards, featuring a weight deviation between finished blades of only 0.06%—far exceeding the classification society's tolerance requirement of ±2%. This marks China's formal mastery of independent design and manufacturing technology for propellers used in large LNG carriers, achieving domestic substitution for high-end vessel propellers.

In the field of ultra-large civil vessels, domestically developed propellers have been successfully deployed in practical applications. The 307,000-ton ultra-large oil tanker "Junwang," delivered in March 2026, represents a new-generation product independently developed by Dalian Shipbuilding. Leveraging optimized ship hull lines, the project team specifically integrated high-efficiency propellers, pre-propeller energy-saving devices, and vortex-eliminating fins into a unified design, achieving comprehensive energy efficiency and environmental performance at world-class levels. The vessel complies with the internationally advanced Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III requirements, fully demonstrating the performance reliability of domestically developed propellers.

Private manufacturing enterprises have also made significant strides in the independent development of ship propellers, with Zhenjiang Tongzhou Propeller Co., Ltd. serving as a prime example. With two decades of dedicated research in propeller development, the company has established a comprehensive ship type database and provides customized hydrodynamic energy-saving solutions tailored to various vessel types. Its developed "energy-saving propeller" has been installed on nearly 10,000 ships worldwide, resulting in cumulative fuel savings of $276 million and carbon reduction exceeding 240,000 tons. Starting from raw material smelting processes, the company has independently developed core technologies for determining optimal ratios of materials such as copper and nickel. The key mechanical properties of its products rank among the best in the industry, with delivery volumes consistently ranking among the top three globally. Export revenue is projected to grow by over 50% year-on-year by 2025, establishing the company as a benchmark enterprise for China's independently developed propellers entering the global market.
