Typical Cases and Market Applications of Independent R&D
In recent years, domestically independently developed fixed-pitch marine propellers have been applied to a variety of mainstream ship types, gaining growing market recognition and a steadily rising domestic market share.
In the sectors of civilian bulk carriers and container ships, serialized fixed-pitch propellers developed domestically have been installed in batches, with a matching rate exceeding 80%. Taking a 100,000-ton bulk carrier built by a domestic shipyard as an example, the vessel is equipped with a domestically self-developed five-bladed fixed-pitch propeller with a diameter of 6.8 meters. By optimizing the blade profile design, its propulsion efficiency is 4% higher than that of comparable imported products. Actual ship fuel consumption during navigation is 3.5% lower than the designed value, enabling shipowners to save more than one million yuan in fuel costs annually, which has earned high recognition from shipowners. Up to now, this series of propellers has been fitted on over 200 vessels in total, operating smoothly without any major quality defects.
Breakthroughs have also been achieved in the independent development of fixed-pitch propellers for special-purpose ships. To meet the low-noise requirements of offshore wind farm service vessels, China has developed dedicated low-noise fixed-pitch propellers. By optimizing the shapes of blade leading and trailing edges and adopting a highly skewed profile design, the underwater radiated noise has been reduced to below 120 decibels, satisfying the noise standards required for close-range operations of wind farm service vessels. These propellers have been installed on multiple domestically built offshore wind farm service vessels, boasting performance on par with imported equivalents while costing approximately 30% less, which has significantly cut shipbuilding expenses.
For inland waterway vessels, tailored shallow-water fixed-pitch propellers have been developed to adapt to the shallow draft and complex operating conditions of inland waterways. Optimizations to diameter and disc area ratio have boosted the propulsion efficiency of propellers under shallow-draft conditions and alleviated suction to the seabed and cavitation. These propellers are now widely deployed on inland container ships and bulk carriers, advancing energy efficiency upgrades for inland vessels and facilitating the green development of inland waterway transportation.
Future Development Directions for the Independent Development of Marine Fixed-Pitch Propellers
Although China has achieved remarkable progress in the independent development of marine fixed-pitch propellers, there still exists a certain gap compared with the world's top level in terms of the performance stability of high-end products and the accumulation of design experience. Further technological upgrading needs to be promoted from three aspects in the future.
First, further advance the development of intelligent design technology. By integrating artificial intelligence and big data technologies, establish a propeller performance optimization model based on actual operational data, continuously improve design approaches to further boost propeller propulsion efficiency and reduce noise and vibration. Meanwhile, develop a digital twin system to monitor and predict performance variations of propellers throughout their entire life cycle, anticipate potential fault risks in advance, and enhance the safety of ship navigation.
Second, accelerate the industrial application of new materials and manufacturing processes. Expand the application of lightweight materials such as titanium alloys and composite materials to propellers to cut down propeller weight and raise propulsion efficiency. In addition, promote the adoption of advanced manufacturing processes including additive manufacturing in propeller production, so as to shorten the production cycle of small-batch propellers with special specifications and lower production costs.
Third, strengthen collaborative innovation across the industrial chain. The development of propellers covers multiple links including raw materials, equipment, design and manufacturing, which requires collaborative innovation between upstream and downstream enterprises to jointly overcome technical bottlenecks. Domestic shipbuilders, propeller manufacturers, raw material suppliers and research institutes should build a long-term and stable cooperation mechanism. Centering on the latest demands of the shipbuilding industry for propellers, they shall jointly carry out technological research, so as to steadily elevate the independent development capacity and international competitiveness of China's marine fixed-pitch propellers.
In summary, the independent development of marine fixed-pitch propellers constitutes a vital part of the high-quality development of China's shipbuilding industry. Through years of endeavors, China has broken foreign technological monopolies, established a complete independent development and manufacturing system, and basically met the supporting demands of the domestic shipbuilding industry. With continuous technological advances in the future, China's self-developed marine fixed-pitch propellers will not only better serve the domestic shipbuilding sector, but also gradually enter the global market, contributing Chinese strength to the development of the world's shipbuilding industry.
