Holding Orders for 25 Vessels, Ranking **** Worldwide!
China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s (CSSC) subsidiary Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) has achieved remarkable success in securing orders for pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), further strengthening its global leadership in the market.
On March 16, GSI, together with CSSC International Trade Corporation, successfully signed and activated construction contracts for three 8,600-car dual-fuel PCTCs.
This follows GSI’s previous contract with South Korea’s H-Line Shipping for three 8,600-car dual-fuel PCTCs. With these new orders, GSI’s orderbook for dual-fuel vehicle carriers has reached 25 vessels, further consolidating its position as the world’s leading builder of dual-fuel PCTCs.
According to export data released by China’s General Administration of Customs, from January to February 2023, China’s automobile exports increased significantly year-on-year, reaching 682,000 vehicles. The construction of vehicle carriers represents GSI’s continued efforts to support China’s automotive exports and strengthen its capabilities in specialized and innovative shipbuilding.
Since securing its first two orders for 7,000-car dual-fuel vehicle carriers in April 2021, GSI has actively responded to changes in global automobile trade, accelerated product transformation, and developed core competitiveness.
In just two years, the company achieved a remarkable leap from zero orders to global leadership in the vehicle carrier market.
The 8,600-car series PCTC is an upgraded and enlarged version 2.0 of GSI’s 7,000-car dual-fuel vehicle carrier design. The vessel adopts an LNG/fuel oil dual-fuel propulsion system and features 14 vehicle decks. While maintaining the main dimensions of the 7,000-car vessel, its capacity has increased by 1,600 vehicles, maximizing transportation efficiency and meeting shipowners’ vehicle shipping demands.
The global fleet of PCTCs is currently around 700 vessels, making this a relatively niche segment within the specialized shipping market. In the past, Chinese shipbuilders had limited experience in constructing and delivering this type of vessel.
As a specialized vessel with significant technical challenges, PCTC construction requires advanced capabilities. GSI has successfully mastered key technologies including hull plate deformation control, Ro-Ro equipment installation and commissioning, and LNG fuel system installation and commissioning.
Through intelligent manufacturing technologies, welding deformation of hull structures is strictly controlled, improving construction precision and efficiency.
By implementing refined management throughout the entire shipbuilding process, GSI has overcome technical challenges related to thin-plate structure deformation control, equipment installation, and commissioning.
Leveraging its extensive experience in building LNG/fuel oil dual-fuel luxury passenger RoRo vessels and conventional oil tankers, GSI has accumulated strong technical expertise in equipment installation, commissioning, LNG bunkering, and related technologies.
