Golden October Harvest Season: Deliveries and Sea Trials Safeguard Key Milestones
On October 26, Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (SHIG), a subsidiary of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), successfully delivered the 14th 85,000-DWT bulk carrier built for Shandong Huachen Financial Leasing Co., Ltd.
In less than one month, SHIG successfully completed four major production milestones: sea trials for the 14th and 16th 85,000-DWT bulk carriers, and deliveries of the 10th and 14th vessels. With outstanding performance, the company demonstrated its commitment to achieving production targets and advancing high-quality development.
During COVID-19 control measures in Qinhuangdao and Shanhaiguan, project management teams remained at their posts, refining work plans, organizing critical construction tasks, and coordinating shipowner and classification inspection activities.
Through methods such as commissioned inspections and image/video documentation, the team successfully addressed challenges caused by the inability to conduct on-site inspections.
The 10th 85,000-DWT bulk carrier was successfully delivered on October 18. Just eight days later, the 14th vessel was delivered. The vessel completed the transition from sea trials to delivery in only 13 days, setting a new record.
The early delivery of the vessel laid a solid foundation for the smooth sea trials and deliveries of subsequent projects.
On the day of delivery, the shipowner sent a letter of commendation, expressing full recognition and appreciation for SHIG’s production organization and quality management during the challenging construction period.
The 14th and 16th 85,000-DWT bulk carriers completed sea trials four and five days ahead of the planned schedule, respectively.
To shorten critical construction cycles, the project team moved key processes forward:
For the 14th vessel, anchor chain installation and accommodation ladder load testing were completed while still in the dock, along with verification of 38 engine room system items.
For the 16th vessel, generator load testing and SCR system inspection were completed in the dock for the first time.
Both vessels achieved the best launch readiness condition among vessels in the series.
During the underwater commissioning stage, despite some equipment suppliers being unable to arrive at the shipyard, commissioning teams combined independent testing with remote guidance from suppliers to complete multiple equipment commissioning tasks, including water mist spray systems.
Meanwhile, the team actively communicated with the shipowner and moved certain sea trial tests forward to the terminal commissioning stage. This optimization allowed some tests, such as machinery running-in trials, to be completed during navigation, improving overall trial efficiency.
After completion of the 16th vessel’s sea trials, all relevant trial personnel and some equipment suppliers remained at the shipyard. Relevant departments organized additional shifts based on trial feedback and delivery requirements to ensure on-time delivery.
The 14th vessel achieved a 75-day underwater construction cycle and reduced the key construction period to 168 days, setting two new records for this vessel type at SHIG.
Guided by the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and under DSIC’s unified deployment, SHIG will continue to strengthen confidence, overcome challenges, optimize organization, and carefully plan production tasks. The company will make every effort to complete the sea trials and deliveries of the 17th and 19th 85,000-DWT bulk carriers, fully supporting the fourth-quarter production campaign and completing its annual vessel delivery targets for 2022.
