The World’s Largest Luxury RoPax Ferry Is Here! 2,500 Passengers Can Take Their Cars to Sea
Built by Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), this 2,500-passenger / 3,800-lane-meter luxury RoPax ferry is set to become a true “five-star hotel at sea.”
Recently, the first vessel of the series built by GSI for Moby Line, a subsidiary of Italy’s Onorato Shipping Group, successfully completed dock-out. Upon delivery, it will become the world’s largest luxury RoPax ferry.
The vessel has an overall length of 237 meters, a molded breadth of 33 meters, and a service speed of approximately 23.5 knots.
Featuring 13 decks and four vehicle decks, the vessel is equivalent to a 10-story “five-star hotel at sea” with four levels of parking facilities. With 536 cabins and vehicle lanes extending 3,800 meters, it can accommodate up to 2,500 passengers traveling with their vehicles.
The vessel incorporates a range of green, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient systems, making it not only a model of a green ship but also significantly improving operational efficiency and economic performance:
Advanced vehicle loading system
A central entrance provides direct access to the main vehicle deck, while two side doors connect to upper-deck ramps, significantly improving loading and unloading efficiency.
Next-generation hybrid scrubber system
The vessel is equipped with an advanced hybrid exhaust gas cleaning system and is designed with LNG conversion capability, allowing future conversion to LNG-fueled propulsion.
Highly efficient low-consumption engine system
The vessel is equipped with an ultra-low fuel consumption engine system, enabling high-speed navigation of up to 25 knots while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency.
The project team fully leveraged construction experience gained from previously delivered Algerian RoPax vessels and continuously optimized construction processes. As a result, the vessel achieved a historic breakthrough in dock-out completeness, setting a new benchmark among vessels of its type.
Before dock-out:
The superstructure lighting system was already operational.
87.8% of cable installation had been completed.
The total cable length throughout the vessel reaches 946 kilometers, equivalent to the distance from Guangzhou to Chongqing.
More than 830 kilometers of cables had already been installed before dock-out.
The vessel also achieved a breakthrough in coating completeness. Some areas above the superstructure remained unfinished at dock-out—not because of construction delays, but because the vessel’s vertical height approaches 40 meters, exceeding the maximum operating height of the dock’s aerial vehicles.
Through balanced and coordinated production planning, the project team had already completed 98% of cabin coating work below Deck 3 before dock-out, significantly improving coating completeness and construction efficiency.
Interior materials have achieved nearly 100% domestic sourcing, and the quality of the model cabins has received strong recognition from Italian shipowner experts and designers.
The vessel will continue using a prefabricated cabin unit construction model for interior outfitting, laying a solid foundation for further shortening the terminal construction period.
