Go Anywhere, Carry Anything? Two New Ship Types Showcase Versatility and Green Innovation

Ice-Strengthened Bulk Carrier: Breaking Through Arctic Challenges

The first 95,000-DWT ice-strengthened bulk carrier built by Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) for Pangaea Logistics Solutions has recently been delivered.

As the first ice-class bulk carrier constructed by GSI, the vessel achieves the Ice-1A class standard under DNV GL’s ice-class rules. It is capable of operating safely in harsh cold-water environments as low as -20°C, breaking through ice layers up to 0.8 meters thick while maintaining normal navigation.

Designed for bulk cargo transportation, the vessel can carry commodities including coal, ore, and grain, and is equipped with seven cargo holds.

Since the signing of the “2+2” Ice-1A 95,000-DWT bulk carrier series contract in January 2019, GSI’s project team has achieved multiple construction milestones, including:

  • Lighting up the forward superstructure before installation;

  • Completing hull block construction quality inspections before lifting;

  • Completing dockside power generation and vehicle commissioning;

  • Successfully finishing underwater construction work.

The vessel also achieved a new milestone by completing ballast system inspection before dock-out for the first time on a bulk carrier project. The overall block assembly completion rate reached 90%, and the dock-out transition review achieved an excellent score of 82 points, providing valuable experience for subsequent vessels in the series.

Multipurpose Gas Carrier: Transporting Multiple Types of Gas with Dual-Fuel Power

Meanwhile, the first 9,500-cubic-meter dual-fuel-powered multipurpose gas carrier built by Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of CSSC, has recently completed dock-out.

Powered by an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system, the vessel is capable of transporting multiple types of liquefied gases, including:

  • Liquefied natural gas (LNG)

  • Liquefied ethylene gas (LEG)

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)

The vessel is designed to meet diverse transportation needs, including:

  • Short- and medium-distance gas transportation;

  • Secondary transfer operations for large gas carriers;

  • Regional gas trade routes.

This project marks the first multipurpose gas carrier constructed by Huangpu Wenchong. The shipyard independently completed the production design of both the cargo handling system and the LNG fuel gas supply system, demonstrating enhanced capabilities in advanced green vessel construction.
