Following the successful matching of CTA140, a domestically developed marine low-speed engine turbocharger, with the dual-fuel prototype of a low-speed engine on March 25 this year, its counterpart — CTA170 turbocharger, the largest high-efficiency turbocharger independently developed by Jiangyin Turbocharger Heavy Industry under China State Shipbuilding Corporation — recently completed a one-time successful matching test with the world's most advanced low-speed diesel engine prototype at Lingang Test Center of CSSC Power Research Institute affiliated to China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
The CTA170 turbocharger is compatible with low-speed engines with a power output ranging from 8,000 to 14,000 kilowatts. It features a maximum pressure ratio of 5.0 and a peak efficiency of 72%, with its overall performance reaching internationally advanced standards. The development of this turbocharger model took two years. The technical R&D team of Jiangyin Turbocharger Heavy Industry rose to challenges, overcame adverse impacts including the COVID-19 pandemic, and made breakthroughs in key technologies such as single-stage ultra-high pressure ratio, high efficiency and low noise. The successful development of the CTA170 turbocharger has further expanded the applicable power range of domestically produced turbochargers, laying a solid foundation for in-depth research on subsequent projects, the independent controllability of key core components, and the improvement of the independent development level of marine power systems.
The Marine Low-Speed Engine Project is a scientific and technological research initiative led by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, with joint participation from its affiliated research institutes and industrial enterprises. Its objectives are to establish a research and development technical system for marine low-speed engines, gradually foster China's independent R&D capability for such engines, realize the coordinated development of key core component manufacturing and complete engine development, and facilitate the construction of an independent and comprehensive shipbuilding industrial system in China.
