On December 9, witnessed by eight classification societies including ABS, BV, CCS, DNV-GL, KR, LR, NK and RINA, the Type Approval Test (TAT) for the CX52 prototype, a low-speed marine diesel engine with a cylinder bore of 520 millimeters, was successfully completed at Dalian Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. of China Shipbuilding Power Engineering Co., Ltd. under China State Shipbuilding Corporation. This marks the successful development of the CX52 prototype engine.
The CX52 engineering prototype has been independently developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). It is the world’s first marine low-speed diesel engine integrated with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. By adopting an on-engine integrated SCR unit to lower the nitrogen oxide concentration in exhaust gas, the engine can fully comply with IMO Tier Ⅲ emission standards without any external aftertreatment devices. This engine boasts prominent technical merits including low fuel consumption, ultra-low emissions and high single-cylinder power, with its performance indicators reaching the world’s leading level. It is widely applicable to 50,000–85,000 DWT bulk carriers, oil and chemical tankers, as well as 1,100–2,500 TEU container ships and multi-purpose vessels.
Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. is mainly responsible for key tasks such as process optimization of spare parts, complete engine manufacturing and assembly, bench tests, and engine type approval tests. Since the launch of the project, under the leadership of CSSC Power Research Institute, Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. has worked closely and forged ahead relentlessly with all participating research institutions, steadily advancing the project step by step. The company has accomplished numerous tough and urgent missions, finally completed the general assembly closure and engine cranking & ignition on schedule, and successfully passed type approval tests conducted by eight major international classification societies.
In the next phase, Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. will actively cooperate with China State Shipbuilding Corporation to promote the market-oriented application of the engineering prototype. It will collaborate with participating institutions to complete bench matching tests for critical core components including fuel systems, bearing shells and turbochargers, so as to drive the coordinated development of key core parts and components.
